Upcoming local and EU elections stir political turmoil in Cyprus

Relevant News

With local administration but also euro elections in Cyprus set to take place in a year’s time political dealing and wheeling has already begun.

In fact, centre Democratic Alignment (DEPA) leader Marios Karoyian recently met with head of the island’s Hunters Party Nicolas Prodromou in a bid to form a possible alliance for June 2024 elections, Philenews reports.

At the same time, the socialist Edek leadership have also extended an invitation to the Hunters Party.

Insiders said talks are kept at an informal level and essentially are a first attempt at cooperation but nothing concrete.

And that Karoyian’s move raised eyebrows within his own party with DEPA MPs wondering whether such a cooperation would be an asset to the tiny party.

Most importantly, a question was raised over their President’s contacts and intentions before the upcoming elections.

At the same time, a meeting between Edek and the Cyprus Hunters Party will reportedly take place in the coming days.

Political circles have been discussing for some time the scenario of cooperation between DEPA and Edek in the European elections in view of the possibility of far-right Elam winning a seat.

However, it seems that there are several difficulties with this scenario appearing very remote, according to insiders.
