‘Titan’ is the title of the smallest work of the exhibition of the same name. It is a handmade male figure made of ivory, whose upraised arms support an ostrich egg. This work, both by its size and its symbolism, has unleashed a broader reflection on the set of works on display in the eponymous exhibition and on the relationships perceived between them.
Whatever gigantically rises up around humans undoubtedly calls into question their physical size and therefore their psyche. Objects seek, occupy and enjoy positions on their own or in relation to others, while at the same time, they project their aspects and even expose themselves blatantly.
The practice of appropriating, re-disposing and managing this kind of raw material – in the context of a purely creative project – presupposes skills and intentions that, at first impression, seem simple, effortless, even innocent. Nevertheless, observing the relationships woven between the large-scale works of the exhibition and ‘Titan’, one realises its ontological undermining. Humans are “diminished”. In the bewilderment and astonishment that his great size causes him, he invents positions and gestures, supportive of morality and robustness, which for him are deemed unquestionable and unyielding. By committing the Whole, he pushes himself to an expressive supremacy while at the same time seeming to transmute his momentum into something complete, fertile and global.

Savvas Christodoulides (b.1961, Pafos, Cyprus) lives and works in Nicosia. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts of Toulouse (1981-86) and at the University of Provence from where he received his PhD from the faculty of Arts et Lettres (2000-2006).
He has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennial (1996), the Athens Biennial (2009) and the Biennial of Sao Paulo (2012). His latest solo exhibition took place at Eins Gallery, Limassol in March 2021.
He has published papers on art. In 2016 he edited the volume Andreas Chrysochos – Texts on Art and in 2016 the volume Dear koumparos – 12 letters of Christoforos Savva to Costas Economou. In March 2021 he published the volume Considering colors through Michalis Pasiardis poetry.
In January 2017 he curated the exhibition Landscapes – Selection of the State Gallery at Evagoras Lanitis Center in Limassol and in April 2017 the exhibition Rooms to contemplate at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in Nicosia. In May 2019 he curated the exhibition Pentadaktylos / Contemporaries at A. G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia.
He teaches art and theory of art and architecture at the School of Architecture / Frederick University, Nicosia, Cyprus.
