Art meets activism in Radical Afterlives project

Relevant News

In the framework of Radical Afterlives: The Cyprus Movement Archive Project, this Friday, May 10, at 8 p.m. the resident artists Belinda Papavasiliou, Emily Demetriou and x.ypno will present their works at Thkio Ppalies, which are the outcome of extensive research and interactions with theĀ Cyprus Movements Archive.

The presentations include live performances, films and an audiovisual installation, approaching and activating the archive in ways that contribute to its various lives and afterlives.

Furthermore, this Sunday, May 12, at 6 p.m. a lecture will be held at Thkio Ppalies by Antonis Pastellopoulos, about the history of the Cypriot radical movements, followed by a discussion about the works of the resident artists.

The talks will be accompanied by a screening of the two short films of Emily Demetriou and x.ypno and the on-site installation of Belinda Papavasiliou.

The Cyprus Movements Archive is an ongoing attempt to digitise, to make public and freely available online the publications of the Cypriot radical movements throughout the island. It includes zines, pamphlets, texts, brochures, academic articles and other material.

In its almost seven years of operation, the Archive has conserved and made accessible hundreds of documents from the radical tradition of Cyprus, especially in the post-1974 era, south of the Green Line.

In this way, not only have the documents been preserved from the erosion of time but they were also disseminated for the first time after many years to wider audiences. Many of these documents would lay hidden in personal or other depositories for years. As such, many people have had the chance to see them for the first time and reflect upon stories and moments of a radical past yet still present.

Considering that archives are not simply a neutral compilation of documents, but that they conceal intentionalities, affect, relations of power and hegemony, this artistic project assumes the multiple meanings of the archive, focusing on the Cypriot context. One of the central aims of the project has been to expand the archive through artistic mediums and expressions while bringing its reach to the wider public.

Project curated by Panos Achniotis and Ioulita Toumazi.
