Relevant News

On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, observed every 8th of May, the facade of the Presidential Palace was symbolically illuminated in red, in the presence of a delegation from the Pan-Cypriot Thalassemia Association.

The delegation was received at the Presidential Palace by the Deputy Government Spokesperson, Yiannis Antoniou, who expressed the state’s satisfaction that our country maintains leadership in the global fight against the prevention, control, and management of thalassemia, as a result of challenging yet targeted efforts, powered by the unity of all relevant state and societal bodies.

Yiannis Antoniou emphasized that the state owes immense gratitude to the International Thalassemia Federation for its tireless efforts aimed at strengthening continuous education and maintaining global interest at the forefront regarding thalassemia issues.

“Cyprus,” he continued, “leads in actions aimed at improving the quality of life for patients, including through the establishment of the first global National Thalassemia Committee and the adoption of a National Strategy for Thalassemia, focusing on further progress in control, prevention, and management of thalassemia, including the provision of genetic counseling, prenatal screening, and advanced medical care to affected individuals.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Health is initiating the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with the International Thalassemia Federation to further enhance our collaboration on this significant issue.

The Cyprus Thalassemia Association delegation consisted of Miltos Miltiadous (President), Elena Kongorouzi, Marios Piripitsis, and Vasiliki Pastou.
