Relevant News

Yesterday afternoon in Nicosia, impostors posing as doctors targeted a 72-year-old in a telephone scam, successfully extracting a sum of €52,000 from her.

The case was reported to the Police and is being investigated by the Nicosia CID. According to what the 72-year-old reported to the Police, around 2 p.m. yesterday, she received a phone call on her landline at her residence from an unknown man who introduced himself as a surgeon doctor from Nicosia General Hospital.

The suspect allegedly asked her for the sum of €57,000 for a surgical procedure, for which her son needed to undergo, who allegedly got injured in an accident, while at the same time, another person could be heard on the phone crying and telling her that he is her son and that he had an accident.

A short while later, an unknown man went to the house of the 72-year-old, where he snatched a bag containing the sum of €52,000 from her balcony.

Following this case, the Police once again advise the public to exercise special caution, emphasizing that such phone calls and claims are false and aimed at deceiving citizens and stealing money. It also appeals to the public to immediately inform the Police in case they receive similar phone calls, by contacting the nearest Police Station or the District CID, or by calling the Citizens’ Line at the telephone number 1460.
