Soldier amputated by grenade second incident in 10 years

Relevant News

The injury of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) soldier from an Egyptian grenade constitutes the second incident recorded within 10 years, following the injury of the national guard Andreas Doulappas in April 2014 at the age of 19.

Andreas Doulappas, who visited the ELDYK soldier who was amputated during a grenade shooting at the shooting range in Agios Modestos, with his post shocks with what he states about his own experience when he was injured 10 years ago by the explosion of an Egyptian grenade during an exercise of the Underwater Demolition Team.

As he points out, “I had the unfortunate role of visiting a young soldier who found himself almost in the same position I was in ten years ago. In an intensive care bed, injured all over his body, amputated arm, serious injuries to the face and eye, and his family in a dismal state. A fact that even I find difficult to believe. How can they continue to use these grenades of this type?”

His post verbatim:

3.04.2014 – I lost my right hand after an explosion of a defective Egyptian grenade. These specific grenades had presented various faults in the past, as well as after my injury!

Today I had the unfortunate role of visiting a young soldier who found himself almost in the same position I was in ten years ago. In an intensive care bed, injured all over his body, amputated arm, serious injuries to the face and eye, and his family in a dismal state. A fact that even I find difficult to believe. How can they continue to use these grenades of this type?

Ten years ago, various military personnel and the captain who conducted the investigation into my case clearly blamed me and deemed the 10+ witnesses of the explosion unreliable.

The captain, with the audacity of a thousand monkeys, told me that there was no way the grenade was defective and that as a defensive grenade, it did its job just fine. Those with basic knowledge of ammunition can understand how ludicrous this claim is.

I could say a lot more, but I’ll stop here. I’ve heard many times the words of military personnel, politicians, and journalists who blamed me.

I remember each one of you. I’m sure you sleep just fine at night because you have no conscience. I am ashamed that people like you are in the crucial positions you hold, degrading their values.
