Citizens of Idalion-Latsia unite against new factory

Relevant News

The Citizens of Idalion-Latsia, in their statement, urge the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, and the Commissioner for Environment not to allow the operation of another polluting industry in the area.

As they state, they closely monitor with deep concern “the developments regarding the attempt of a new factory in the industrial area of Idalion to change its use with an environmental study submitted full of inaccuracies.”

The factory, they add, “after securing a permit from the Department of Environment for works concerning plastic processing, has reapplied for aluminum processing, and before obtaining the necessary permits, has already acquired equipment worth millions of euros. The attempt to change the use after the installation of machinery for aluminum processing without public consultation and without an environmental study has raised significant suspicions and distrust about its intentions.”

“After analyzing the environmental study that it was ultimately forced to proceed with, we identified gaps and inaccuracies at various points. These points lie in the factory’s waste and the measures to be taken for the possibility of fire. We emphasize that fires often occur in the area, and there have been numerous cases where various materials burned, and the residents of the area suffered from the fumes,” they add.

The situation in the area, they report, is already burdened both in terms of pollution and environmental disturbance with serious consequences for the health of the residents of Idalion and Latsia, and any additional burden that the factory’s activity will bring will have multiple negative consequences.

They state that the consultation process for changing the use of the factory is open until May 10 and call on the public to submit their objection to the operation of the factory at the following link:https://eia.moa.gov.cy/public/eiaview.html?no=3659
