The Corfiot tradition of smashing pots followed today for the first time on Holy Saturday by the Folklore Society “Akrites Yeriou”.
Specifically, the Society decided for the first time to adopt this particular custom to mark the 50 years of Turkish occupation of north Cyprus, thus smashing pots with messages against the occupation and names of occupied villages.
In total, they smashed 50 pots. In tradition, this is believed to ward off bad luck.
