Third lane at Agios Dometios checkpoint will ease congestion

Relevant News

The Ministry of Transport is taking steps to address traffic congestion on the road leading to the Agios Dometios checkpoint by proposing the construction of a third lane in both directions.

This initiative was publicised following a question raised by DIKO Member of Parliament Christos Orfanidis, who inquired about the potential benefits and associated costs of such a project.

In his response, Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades acknowledged the traffic issues and outlined a plan to create a regulatory proposal for the additional lane and pavement.

The project aims to improve traffic flow and alleviate congestion on the road network near the checkpoint.

Minister Vafeades emphasised that discussions are ongoing regarding the project within the framework of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Crossing Points, along with the Greek Cypriot Negotiator’s office.

Funding avenues are also being explored, with the possibility of the EU contributing to the construction costs since the project falls within the UN Buffer Zone.

A final decision on funding will be made after the design and cost estimate are finalised.
