President to grant pardon to man, 82, who shot home intruder

Relevant News

President Christodoulides is expected to intervene in the case of an 82-year-old man recently sentenced to two and a half years in prison by the Limassol Criminal Court.

The man, convicted for shooting a would-be thief at his home in Alassa last June, is now likely to be granted a presidential pardon following public outcry over the sentence.

According to philenews, the Presidential Palace, in consultation with the Law Office, is reportedly preparing to start the necessary procedures to secure the man’s release.

The incident occurred when the man, noticing a power cut at his home, went outside with his hunting rifle to see what was happening.

He encountered an unknown individual tampering with his property’s electrical wiring. In a confrontation that ensued, the 82-year-old fired his weapon to intimidate the intruder and injured him unintentionally, as the court found.

Following the shooting, the 82-year-old reported the incident to the police and informed his family members.

This incident followed a previous theft of cables from the defendant’s property just two days earlier.
