Saint Habakkuk monks sue Church over unpaid wages

Relevant News

Three monks from the Habakkuk Monastery have taken legal action against the Church of Cyprus for failing to pay their salaries.

The monks, accompanied by their lawyer, Adrianna Klaedes, filed private criminal cases at the Nicosia District Court, alleging that despite repeated requests, the Church’s representatives have ceased payment of their wages.

According to Klaedes, the monks had sent a letter to the Church approximately three weeks ago, demanding payment of their salaries. However, an investigation conducted through Social Insurance revealed that the Church had not responded to their requests.

The situation has left the monks in a precarious financial position, as they have no other means of support following the freezing of their assets, their lawyers said. Consequently, they are seeking redress through the legal system to secure their rightful earnings.

Following the registration of the private criminal cases, it is anticipated that the first court appearance will be scheduled by the registry office.

This development will provide an opportunity for representatives of the Church of Cyprus to respond to the allegations brought against them.
