Leading party member Efi Xanthou handed her resignation to the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation last week.
In her letter to the central committee of the party, Xanthou spoke of a “highly undemocratic process that was followed at the provincial assembly of Nicosia,” held by the movement on March 27, 2024.
She notes that certain candidates were excluded from the voting process, while a candidate was proposed for mayoral support despite not officially being in the running, and another candidate endorsed by the movement as a deputy was notably absent from the ballot altogether.
She notes that the possibility of her departure from the movement troubled her since November 2022; however, with the aforementioned event, she realised that “there is no hope, and the decision to resign was inevitable.”
