More lifeguards manning beaches flooded with winter swimmers under consideration

Relevant News

The Interior Ministry is considering a proposal for an additional number of lifeguards manning beaches flooded with winter swimmers in the districts of Larnaca and Limassol, Philenews reports.

Minister Constantinos Ioannou told MPs on Tuesday he intends to submit a proposal to the Department of Public Administration and Personnel for the additional staffing of beaches in these districts. But, first, the overall cost has to be estimated, he added.

The issue was discussed last October with the lifeguards’ union within the island’s National Coastal Safety Plan – SALAMIS.

Recognising the need for proper staffing of winter beaches, the Minister expressed optimism over their strengthening sooner rather than later.

The issue of understaffing of beaches in winter was again highlighted by Opposition Akel MP George Koukoumas who specifically referred to Mackenzie, Finikoudes and Oroklini beaches in Larnaca.

These beaches, he added, are flooded with winter swimmers – yet out of seven lifeguard stations only three are staffed.

He then pointed out that according to SALAMIS plan these must be staffed with two lifeguards each – seven days a week.
