Health professionals in Cyprus allegedly refuse to properly dispose medical waste

Relevant News

Mainly private sector health professionals in Cyprus allegedly refuse to cooperate with licensed companies which collect, transfer and properly dispose medical waste in accordance with rules and regulations.

And this is a big headache for the state, Philenews reported on Wednesday.

This seems to be the state of play over the past decade and no competent body – up to date – rings alarms bells to medical practitioners all across Cyprus violating the rules.

Specifically, official data shows that out of the 2,791 medical care providers contracted to the island’s General Health Scheme (Gesy) only 667 comply with the provisions of the legislation.

A total of 2,079 specialist doctors and 712 general practitioners have joined the state health scheme.

The unorthodox management of medical waste represents a direct threat to public health and towards the island’s environment.

Violation of the strict regulations governing the disposal of medical waste endangers the well-being of citizens and the ecosystem.

In Cyprus, the management of medical facility waste is strictly regulated by European and national legislation. The inefficient disposal of medical waste, especially of hazardous materials from environments with a risk of biological transmission, is a ticking time bomb.
