Cyprus Architects Association demands demolition of illegal monastery

Relevant News

The Cyprus Architects Association expresses strong dissatisfaction regarding the illegal construction of the Holy Monastery in Cape Greco and demands the immediate demolition of the building.

In its statement, the Association states, “Once again, we are faced with the degradation of the protected areas of the Natura 2000 network, the Special Conservation Zone (SCZ), and the Special Protection Area (SPA) of Cape Greco, with the Church itself being the protagonist this time. The Church, which should be a role model in adhering to principles and legislation, shows insensitivity towards respecting nature and the environment.”

On the contrary, it notes that the Holy Metropolis of Constantia and Ammochostos is leading the “illegal” construction without securing all the required permits, persistently seeking the legalisation of “unauthorised interventions and illegal constructions” within the environmentally protected zone.

Unfortunately, the Cyprus Architects Association observes the phenomenon of construction arbitrariness increasing at uncontrolled rates, resulting in serious consequences for the environment, the safety of citizens, and architecture itself.

The Cyprus Architects Association urges the state and all relevant authorities to take strict measures to control and combat this sad and recurring crime.
