Ministerial meeting addresses fireworks regulations

Relevant News

A meeting with Minister of Justice and Public Order Marios Hartsiotis and the Police took place on the morning of Maundy Thursday with Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou to jointly examine the framework for the use of fireworks and the possibility of tightening it, said Panayiotou on Thursday.

Panayiotou was responding to a journalist’s question during statements on her customary visit to supermarkets in Nicosia ahead of Easter.

It is recalled that, in the aftermath of the fire that broke out the previous week in the Limassol province, and after a fire that preceded it in the Paphos province, which was caused by the use of fireworks, the Minister announced the revocation of all permits for fireworks.

Asked whether this measure is permanent, Panayiotou explained that fireworks that need to be launched from the ground require a special permit.

Due to the potential for fires caused by fireworks, Panayiotou said that the Mining Service proceeded with the revocation of permits precisely to examine these phenomena.

“We put everything back on the table, and in the coming days, we will finalize how we examine and address the whole issue,” the Minister said.

According to information, after today’s meeting, others will follow, involving other relevant bodies, in order to examine all aspects of fireworks use and discuss measures to tighten the framework governing it.

Mrs. Panayiotou was also asked about the progress of the investigation into the causes of the recent fire in the Limassol province, but noted that, as the investigation is ongoing, she will make statements when it is completed.
