Residents frustrated over abandoned playground

Relevant News

A beautiful playground with modern and suitable toys for young children has turned into a jungle for some time now. The only ones enjoying it are a few cats, which at least keeps away rodents.

All this can be found in a newly established neighbourhood in the Zakaki area, near the new Limassol port.

Despite developments gaining momentum, as the residents claim, they have been forgotten by the Municipal Authorities.

Residents of this particular area, near Georgiou Athana Street, have contacted Phileleftheros expressing their frustration with the situation at the small but new playground, as the only thing one sees when visiting is the dry grass and rubbish surrounding it.

The area, as Kostas, a resident of the neighbourhood, mentions, was granted a few years ago by a private individual who built apartment buildings in the area, with the responsibility for its maintenance lying with the Municipal Authorities.

“It was granted as a green space and playground, but the Limassol Municipality, responsible for its maintenance, has abandoned it for some time now. Despite the fact that the toys and flooring are safe, the playground is inaccessible as it’s choked by grass exceeding one metre!

As Kostas noted, there are four other green spaces and playgrounds in the area, but this particular playground is the safest.

“It’s unthinkable for children to have this space but not be able to play simply because it has turned into a jungle. We were forced to place food containers for the cats in an attempt to prevent mice and snakes from “eating” us. We feel that we, in this area, are second-class citizens,” he emphasized, visibly frustrated.

During our visit to the site, we spoke to a resident of the opposite newly built apartment building who told us, “It’s a shame to have such a playground for children, yet they can’t enjoy it because no responsible person cares enough to give instructions to clean it up, as is also happening in other parks.”
