President to visit College of Europe

President Nikos Christodoulides will travel to Bruges and Brussels, where he will address the College of Europe and participate in the European Council Summit, respectively.

In statements to journalists at the Presidential Palace, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said, “President Nikos Christodoulides will travel tomorrow to Bruges, Belgium, where he will visit the College of Europe and then proceed to Brussels, where he will participate in the proceedings of the European Council and attend a working lunch with the UN Secretary-General.”

Specifically, President Christodoulides will be in Bruges tomorrow, following an invitation extended to him by the Cyprus Students’ Association of the College, to address the College as part of the national week dedicated to Cyprus.

It is noted that this is the first time a President of the Republic of Cyprus visits the College.

Immediately upon arrival at the College, the President will have a private meeting with Rector Mogherini and then address students and academics of the College of Europe and the European Diplomatic Academy, including Cypriots.

Subsequently, the President will meet with European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas before departing for Brussels.

On the following day, March 21, the President will participate in the European People’s Party proceedings and then attend a working lunch with the UN Secretary-General and the heads of EU member states, focusing mainly on the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, and global challenges.

The Summit’s proceedings and a working dinner will follow.

Among the topics to be discussed at the Summit are the Middle East, Ukraine, Migration, Security, EU Enlargement, and External Relations.

On March 22, the President will participate in the commemorative event for the 30 years of the European Economic Area, along with the Leaders of EU member states, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. A Eurozone Summit in an expanded composition will follow.

President Christodoulides, accompanied by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Presidential Press Office Director Victor Papadopoulos, and officials, will return to Cyprus on the night of March 22.”

Asked if there will be a private meeting between the President of the Republic and the UN Secretary-General, the Spokesperson said that if the opportunity arises, based on the UN Secretary-General’s schedule, it is something “we will consider.”
