Dumping ground cleared in Tseri

Relevant News

Overall, 25 truck trips were needed to collect the items that citizens threw away near a point close to the Nicosia ring road.

Following a relevant report posted by philenews, the coordinator of the Nicosia district office at the Department of Environment, Neoclis Antoniou, was alerted.

He contacted the Mayor of Tseri (near the area where the dumpsite was created) and together they undertook the cleaning of the area. The area was cleaned, and the whole operation cost €10,000.

As Antoniou stated to Phileleftheros, there are scattered dozens of dumpsites in Nicosia, mainly in remote areas, so as not to be noticed by those who discard useless items.

At the same time, there are eight recycling points in Nicosia where citizens can dispose of almost everything they throw away in illegal dumpsites for free.

The phenomenon is not only found in Nicosia, considering that €1 million was spent for the collection of waste throughout Cyprus during the period of 2021-2022.

It is worth noting that financial resources are limited, and each district has €40,000-€50,000 available for cleaning purposes.

In this specific dumpsite, which has now been cleaned, items ranging from refrigerators and beds to tires and sofas had been discarded.

The choice of disposal location for each useless item is made in areas where there is no visual contact with roads or inhabited areas from where those carrying the materials for disposal could be noticed.

More specifically, when we visited the site, we found a refrigerator shell from which the metal parts were removed (presumably for recycling), 5-6 sofas, wooden pallets, buckets, plastic of all kinds (from car bumpers to other vehicle parts), and cardboard boxes.

Also, large bags of unknown contents, sports shoes, soccer balls, travel bags, plastic containers, water hoses, mattresses, furniture sponges, furniture, paint-covered plastic pieces, wood scraps, plastic bottles, mops, old plastic water containers, plastic boxes, old car cushions, an old toilet, pots, and even an old plastic water tank were found. And of course, plastic chairs and wooden tables were also present.
