Movement in Varosha with the properties: Ankara’s order to examine applications concerning Famagusta first

Relevant News

The Turkish side is moving along at least two axes, trying to put pressure on the Greek side and to force it, according to its plans, to come to the table and begin negotiations according to the Turkish agenda. Namely, that of recognizing sovereign equality and equal international status.

The first axis is the continuous and systematic violations in the buffer zone and the second is the methodical actions taken with the Greek Cypriot properties. The Turkish moves are being closely monitored by the Republic of Cyprus, which is taking deterrent measures for both actions by the occupying force.

In the buffer zone, Turkish movements continue, with the occupation army advancing into the area. This is happening all along the ceasefire line and, according to informed sources, Ankara’s tactic is to seize territory and maintain an atmosphere of tension. This tactic, the Turkish side believes, puts the Republic of Cyprus under constant pressure. This is because it involves the seizure of territory and the military advance of the Turkish occupying army. At the same time, it is also causing concern among the residents living in areas adjacent to the ceasefire line. It should be noted in this regard that in this matter the United Nations is not acting based on its obligations but based on the logic of “equidistance.”

On the property issue, the Turkish side is promoting a plan to encourage Greek Cypriots to appeal to the so-called Compensation Commission, so that gradually the property will be transferred to them. This is particularly intensifying at the moment and following the arrest of the Turkish Cypriot lawyer in Rome for usurping Greek Cypriot property.

Currently, the occupation force is forwarding the cases to the so-called committee with priority given to those applications concerning the enclosed area of Famagusta.

At this stage, while in the occupied territories the Turkish side is attempting to impose a fait accompli, including what was mentioned above, there is also diplomatic mobility. This is due to the appointment of the UN envoy and the start of her first round of contacts.

It is reported that in the first round of contacts of the UN Secretary General’s envoy, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, neither she nor her interlocutors opened their cards. No “opening” was made, and although one person analyzed what was recorded, Nicosia was the only one to show a willingness to engage in a discussion that would move the effort forward. The fact that there were no indications of the next step is seen as natural and expected, as it is the beginning.
