Agios Sylas fire under control, but authorities on alert due to strong winds

Relevant News

Firefighters gained the upper hand on a wildfire that erupted at midday on Thursday in the Agios Sylas industrial area of Limassol, but strong winds forecast for Friday could still hamper their efforts.

The blaze, which burned through approximately six square kilometres of land, was brought under control by early evening, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis.

However, he warned that the threat of rekindling remained high due to expected winds.

Kettis noted that firefighting forces are positioned perimetrically and will work through the night to secure the area.

The fire threatened the Agios Sylas industrial zone, but a firebreak created west of the industries successfully protected the area. Residences and several properties were also safeguarded. While the main firefront was managed, the northwestern section remained a challenge, with flames spreading unchecked.

The Fire Service mobilised additional resources by recalling personnel, and all workers in the industrial area were evacuated as a precaution.

A large contingent of emergency services responded to the incident, including the Fire Service, the Department of Forests, the British Bases, aerial support from various agencies, the Provincial Administration, the Civil Defence, the Game Fund Service, and volunteer groups.

More than 20 firefighting vehicles and four aircraft from the Republic and the British Bases participated in the operation.

An initial assessment of potential damage caused by the fire will be conducted once the area is declared safe.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
