A 19-year-old man will face trial before the Famagusta Criminal Court for the alleged sexual assault of an 80-year-old tourist in Ayia Napa.

The man was arrested on December 14, after the woman who was holidaying in Ayia Napa, reported the incident to the police.

Recounting her experience, she said that around 3:30 in the afternoon on the same day, she noticed a man following her as she walked back from the sea. Eventually, outside some hotel premises closed for the winter, the suspect forcibly grabbed her, threw her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

Following the woman’s complaint, investigators from the Famagusta Police delved into the incident, collecting evidence from closed-circuit surveillance systems in the area.

In one of these recordings, a man was identified tailing the complainant, subsequently positively identified and arrested.

The accused had initially claimed to be 17 years old and residing in a centre for unaccompanied minors. However, forensic examinations, as per police sources, revealed his actual age to be between 21 and 23 years.

The charges against him include allegations of sexual assault involving penetration, coercion into sexual acts, abduction, and indecent assault.

The trial will take place on January 19.
