A 25-year-old driver has been found guilty of causing a fatal road collision on the Limassol-Platres road in July 2020.

The collision resulted in the death of 19-year-old passenger Marilena Perikleous.

The Limassol District Court convicted the defendant of causing death by reckless, careless and dangerous driving, and illegal overtaking. He had pleaded not guilty to all charges. The Court acquitted the defendant of the second charge related to excessive speed.

According to court documents, the collision occurred on Friday, 10th July 2020, at 11:50 pm. The car driven by a 20-year-old, with Marilena Perikleous and another 19-year-old passenger, collided with a vehicle driven by the defendant who was overtaking in a prohibited zone.

The collision resulted in serious injuries to all occupants of both vehicles. Marilena Perikleous suffered critical head and brain injuries and died nine days later in hospital.

Following the guilty verdict, a new hearing will be scheduled to determine the sentence. The case was handled by Public Prosecutor Konstantina Hadjikostasinou on behalf of the Attorney General.

Marilena’s death became a gift of life for three organ recipients, as her family decided to donate her organs after being informed by medical professionals that she would not survive.
