Auditor General to lodge objection

Relevant News

Received the application at the Supreme Constitutional Court for cessation, said the Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides, adding that he has instructed to lodge an objection.

“The application was submitted to me,” he stated, adding that he has instructed his lawyers to file an objection.

“I stand by my statement from yesterday and will not make any further comments. The judiciary now has the floor,” he concluded.

It is recalled that on Friday the Attorney General, George Savvides, registered with the Supreme Constitutional Court, acting as Council, a request, pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, for the dismissal of the Auditor General of the Republic, Odysseas Michaelides, due to improper conduct.

In a statement, the Legal Service stated that the application was lodged, following the relevant constitutional provisions, with a view to the public interest and for the Council to evaluate the data, as the only competent body to decide “whether Mr. Odysseas Michaelides is accountable for improper conduct, which would result in his dismissal from his position”.

The Auditor General, in a written statement yesterday, had said that “the implementation of sanctions has been underway for months and is now entering its final phase,” while noting that the process initiated on Friday “will bring catharsis and will provide the opportunity for transparency for the individual whose conduct is improper.”
