Kidney patients in Cyprus struggle despite medical progress

Relevant News

The Cyprus Nurses Association (PASYN) is urging for improved kidney healthcare access in the country, highlighting several roadblocks currently hindering optimal care.

Marking World Kidney Day on March 14th, PASYN issued a press release detailing these challenges, which include delays in early diagnosis, lack of universal healthcare or sufficient insurance coverage, and limited awareness among healthcare workers. Additionally, the high cost and difficulty in obtaining necessary medications were flagged as concerns.

The press release emphasizes the importance of a “multifaceted strategy” to ensure not only kidney health but also heart health and overall patient well-being.

It highlights recent advancements in treatment that offer promising avenues for preventing or delaying chronic kidney disease, reducing complications like cardiovascular events and kidney failure, and ultimately improving patients’ quality of life and lifespan.

PASYN also stresses the need for increased public awareness about chronic kidney disease and specialized training for healthcare professionals.

According to the press release, chronic kidney disease impacts an estimated 850 million people globally and was responsible for over 3.1 million deaths in 2019.

Worryingly, it is currently ranked as the eighth leading cause of death, but if left unaddressed, it is projected to become the fifth leading cause by 2040.

To raise awareness and promote education, a joint event is being organized on March 20th by TONONE/PASYN, the Cyprus Friends of Nephropatients Association (Limassol Branch), and the Cyprus University of Technology’s Nursing Department.

The event, aimed at informing the public, patients, and healthcare professionals, will be held at the “Tasos Papadopoulos” hall at the Cyprus University of Technology.
