Politicians in the spotlight over church committee role

Relevant News

The crème de la crème of politics in the area of Famagusta participates in the Ecclesiastical Committee of the Bishopric of Constantia and Ammochostos, holding an advisory role to the respective bishop.

This fact takes on dimensions in relation to the recent case of the illegal construction of a monastery in the protected area of Cape Greco.

The heads of local authorities, who are also building authorities based on the road and building regulations law, participate in the Ecclesiastical Committee of the local Bishopric, creating an issue of conflict of interest.

The issue is primarily called upon to be answered by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, who in the case of the illegal construction of the monastery in the protected area of Cape Greco, in violation of existing environmental, urban planning, and building legislation, does not seem to have taken any action as prescribed by the law.

It is noted that for two whole weeks, while all competent Authorities (Ministries/Departments/Services) have taken drastic measures to immediately terminate the construction works and submit the necessary demolition and restoration plans, the wholly responsible local Authority based on the road and building regulations law has not made any public statement on the matter.

It is characteristic that the Mayor of Ayia Napa was repeatedly asked by several journalists and media outlets to comment on the matter, but he refused to do so.

Below are the names of all the lay members of the Ecclesiastical Committee of the Bishopric of Constantia and Ammochostos as they appear on the official website.

Lay members: Yiannis Karousos, Dr. Symos Ioannou, Theodoros Pyrillis, Yiorgos Takkas, Andros Karagiannis, Christos Zannettou, Zina Lysandrou Panayides, Theodoros Takkas, Michalis Tziortas, Dimitrios Skaros, Adamo Hatzichristodoulou, Georgios Karoullas, Vassilios Nicolaides, and Panagiotis Konstantinou.
