Government states it supports new UN Envoy

The commitment to support the mission of María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar is reiterated by the government.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, regarding the two reports of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus and UNFICYP, notes that the Secretary-General’s commitment to restarting substantive negotiations is reflected in the recent appointment of a Special Envoy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs “welcomes the reaffirmation of the Secretary-General’s commitment to the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, guided by the relevant Security Council resolutions that also define the UN parameters”.

“The Secretary-General’s commitment to restarting substantive negotiations, leading to a mutually acceptable solution within the framework of the United Nations, is reflected in the recent appointment of Ms. Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar as his Personal Envoy. The Cyprus Government reiterates its commitment to support Ms. Holguin Cuellar’s mission, looking forward to a swift resolution of the deadlock and the resumption of the negotiation process.”

The government also highlights the following:

“Regarding the report on UNFICYP, concern is expressed about the Secretary-General’s concern about developments in the enclosed Varosha area, for which Turkey is responsible. It is also noted that the United Nations maintain their unchanged position on the Varosha issue, reiterating their call for full compliance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and a return to the status quo ante.

Regarding the situation in the buffer zone, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shares the Secretary-General’s concern about the repeated violations by the Turkish occupying forces, which seem to be part of a systematic policy challenging the ceasefire line and the status of the buffer zone. Specifically, a series of violations in Pyla, the Deryneia area, and the broader area of Nicosia are recorded in the reports, with a specific reference to the buffer zone in the Agios Dometios area and Maria’s House. Unfortunately, in all cases, including the ongoing violation in Strovilia, there is no clear documentation of events, following a consistent trend of maintaining equal distances.

References to humanitarian issues, such as the living conditions of the trapped individuals and the need for Turkey’s cooperation in clarifying the fate of the missing persons, unfortunately remain subdued.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to cooperate constructively with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus for the effective implementation of its mandate terms, with the ultimate goal of achieving a comprehensive and just solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.”
