A prisoner who escaped from police custody earlier today was recaptured in the Agios Dometios area of Nicosia within an hour, police said.
The suspect, who is being held on drug trafficking charges, was spotted by officers combing the area after his photo was circulated via an internal police alert system.
He was found wandering about 3-4 kilometres from the Central Prisons, where he was due to be transferred from court.
An investigation is underway into the circumstances of the escape.
According to earlier reports, the suspect appears to have taken advantage of a gap in the handover process between police and prison officers.
He was returning from court in Nicosia when he mingled with members of the public in the prison courtyard and slipped away unnoticed.
