Relevant News

Environmental organisations on Thursday applauded a decision by the government to order the pause and the reevaluation of all works in Akamas.

In a joint statement, BirdLife Cyprus, Terra Cypria, the Cyprus Wildlife Society, and the Cyprus Natural Coastline Initiative expressed their approval of the recent decision by the Ministry of Agriculture regarding the Sustainable Development Plan of the Akamas National Forest Park.

The Cabinet’s resolution, announced today, is seen as a positive step in the right direction, according to the organisations.

They highlight that the decision includes provisions for the adoption and implementation of crucial corrective measures, addressing evident violations of legal and environmental terms within the Sustainable Development Plan of the Akamas National Forest Park.

“As both environmental organisations of civil society and experts and members of the Ad-hoc Committee for Special Ecological Assessment, we will continue to monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Plan of the Akamas National Forest Park and the measures included in the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 20.12.2023, to ensure the effective protection and integrated management of the Akamas Peninsula. We also aim to preserve the important institution of the Special Ecological Assessment of projects and plans that may affect the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network,” state the environmental organisations.
