ELAM targeting DISY’s right-wing as it eyes Pelekanos

Relevant News

Far-right ELAM is aiming to attract voters from DISY, capitalising on the internal problems of the conservative party.

As part of its quest for normalisation in Cyprus’ political landscape, ELAM is approaching mainstream politicians to join its ticket, while simultaneously positioning itself as the new right-wing party in Cypriot politics, challenging DISY.

Following the announcement of former Financial Commissioner Pavlos Ioannou as an independent candidate for the European Parliament, ELAM has now approached Marios Pelekanos, until recently the Deputy President of DISY, with a proposal to join their electoral list.

This is a clear indication of the Cypriot far-right’s intentions to challenge the party that has established itself as the representative of the Cypriot right, namely DISY. It is also a move that capitalises on the dissatisfaction or disappointment of DISY supporters.

Should Pelekanos accept ELAM’s offer, it would likely spark more turbulence within DISY.

Pelekanos’ profile, being a former Deputy President of DISY and also a former state official as the last Government Spokesman under President Nicos Anastasiades, adds significance to this potential alliance.

Pelekanos has not yet responded to ELAM’s approach and is expected to provide an answer by the end of the week, upon his return from abroad.

It is known that Pelekanos had expressed an interest in becoming DISY’s candidate for the European Parliament. However, he was unsuccessful in securing a place on the ticket following an internal election. This led to his resignation, citing reasons of integrity.

He later issued a written statement explaining that his resignation was not due to the election result but rather the events that transpired behind the scenes, as he claimed. “My decision to resign is final, and in the coming period, I will provide more details on the reasons for my resignation,” he stated. His comments hinted at alleged schemes played against him, though he did not provide further details.

It is notable that Pavlos Ioannou, the former Financial Commissioner, is also associated with DISY and was discussed as a potential parliamentary candidate for the previous legislative elections.

His candidature with ELAM has already generated discussion, and the potential influx of DISY supporters to the far-right party is interpreted by many as clearing the path for AKEL to take the lead in the next elections.

Reaction from DISY

When contacted to comment on the reports regarding Marios Pelekanos and ELAM, the Deputy Spokesperson of DISY, Xenia Constantinou, stated that Pelekanos remains a member of the party.

“I have no official information, I have only heard this rumour today. You should first speak to him to see if it’s true,” she said, adding that there has been no official communication with DISY regarding this matter.

When asked about the implications if the rumours were confirmed, Constantinou stated that the necessary procedures would be initiated.

“The President has already requested that the organisational committee reach out to anyone who is running with another party to convey the decision of the disciplinary council,” she added, confirming that some individuals are on this list.
