DISY gears up for EU elections amidst internal strife

Relevant News

Saturday marks the beginning of DISY’s involvement in the European Parliament elections, with members of the party’s political bureau summoned to vote for the party’s candidates.

The significance of today’s session of the party’s collective body is amplified as it occurs at a crucial juncture, with Pindarou seeking to turn a new page following the recent resurgence of internal conflicts that have plagued the party since the presidential elections.

Two out of the six positions on the ballot have already been secured by Eleni Stavrou and Christiana Xenofontos. Through internal regulations stipulating a 30% quota for women and young people up to 35 years old, they managed to clinch one of the coveted spots on the ballot.

The remaining four positions are contested by Loucas Fourlas, Marios Pelekanos, Konstantinos Petrides, Michalis Hadjipantela, Christos Angelides, and Onisiforos Iordanou, who vie to persuade the 130 members of the Political Bureau with voting rights.

MP Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis withdrew from the race yesterday, submitting a letter to the political bureau to facilitate the process.

In today’s political bureau session, party president, Annita Demetriou, is expected to convey messages of victory and unity through her speech, as winning the European Parliament elections is anticipated to contribute to uniting DISY following the defeat in the presidential elections last February.

The candidates vying for a position on the party’s ballot will each have five minutes during the session to persuade the members of the collective body that their name deserves to be among DISY’s chosen candidates for the European elections. Following this, a vote will be conducted by the 130 members eligible to vote between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. followed by the announcement of the results.

The session takes place in the absence of the former president of the party, Averof Neophytou, who chose to be present at the UN headquarters in New York, where the Parliamentary Assembly 2024 is being held.
