Liopetri river project decisions to be taken after Easter

Relevant News

The future of yet another major project, concerning the redevelopment of the Liopetri River, will be judged in the coming period, given that the contractor, after a series of extensions secured, is not expected to complete it within the established timelines.

A few days ago, the Ammochostos Tourism Development and Promotion Company requested intervention from the President of the Republic himself to expedite the procedures, as both the professionals in the area and its tourism product are negatively affected.

What’s incredible is that the work was supposed to be completed by March 2023; however, only 50% of the project has been completed so far, according to both the Ammochostos Tourism Development and Promotion Company and the Liopetri Community Council.

“There is no way the works will be finished by the July 1 deadline given,” the Liopetri mayor stated to Phileleftheros, indicating that acceleration of the work has been requested many times. “We demand intervention from the Minister of Interior Affairs as well, so that they, along with the Minister of Agriculture, can address the emerging issues,” he noted.

Nevertheless, the matter is expected to be discussed at a meeting to be held after Easter, attended by both ministers and officials from the Department of Town Planning and Housing, which is responsible for overseeing the works.

According to information from reliable sources, two proposals will be considered: either terminating the contract with the current contractor and reissuing the tender or granting a new extension.

The biggest victims of the delay and obstruction observed are the approximately 30 fishermen of the Liopetri River, who were forced to relocate to other shelters.

The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panayiotou, visited the professionals last Thursday, listened to and documented their problems, and assured them that depending on the decisions made regarding the contract issue, corresponding support measures will be taken.
