DISY and ELAM clash over Pelekanos

Relevant News

The echo of including Marios Pelekanos on the ELAM ballot for the European elections continues.

Following the official announcement by the far-right party of his candidacy and the strong reaction from DISY, both sides repositioned themselves yesterday, prompted by statements made on the sidelines of a student parade in Nicosia by the president of DISY and the ELAM spokesperson.

Annita Demetriou and Geadis Geadis commented on the issue, with the former highlighting the political differences between her party and ELAM, attempting to close the gap of any leaks from DISY, and the latter referring to the ballot and the people’s judgment.

“There is no political identity with ELAM,” said Annita Demetriou when asked if there are DISY positions that resonate with ELAM.

Responding to journalists’ questions, Demetriou commented, in light of Marios Pelekanos’ joining the ELAM ballot, that everyone is judged by their choices.

When asked about the situation in DISY after the departure of its former vice-president and his inclusion in the ELAM ballot, Demetriou said, “Everyone is judged by their choices.”

“And the people,” she added, “have judgment, and despite the difficulties, DISY is rooted in principles and values that will protect and help it remain a leading force in the country because the country needs a strong DISY to face the challenges and difficulties.”

Responding to a question about whether DISY positions have resonance in ELAM, Demetriou said that the differences are political and not personal.

“And there is no connection between DISY and ELAM and no political identity. That is certain,” she concluded.

With this statement, the president of DISY aimed to respond to claims linking DISY with ELAM and to send a message to alarmists that DISY has no affiliation with ELAM.

However, there is intense debate about the leaks DISY seems to have towards ELAM, as reflected in opinion polls.

Essentially, Geadis Geadis’ statement relies on this dynamic.

“The people will judge, and on June 9th, they will send the right messages to both critics and those supporting this effort,” said the ELAM spokesperson when asked to comment on reactions to the inclusion of DISY’s former vice-president, Marios Pelekanos, on the party’s ballot.

“The people are there; they will judge, and on June 9th, they will send the appropriate messages to both critics and those supporting this effort,” Geadis said in response to journalists’ questions.

When asked if Pelekanos’ inclusion strengthens the ELAM ballot, Geadis responded that any move made on the ELAM ballot is considered suitable to strengthen the party’s list.

Responding to a question about their feelings if Marios Pelekanos or Pavlos Ioannou are elected, Geadis said the issue is not about individuals, adding, “We choose who can best serve our homeland.”

“Beyond that, the struggle we are in is collective, as we do as ELAM, and this is what raises our consciousness in the world, that above personal interests, we put forward what we try to promote as a faction, and that is why ELAM is strengthened on a daily basis,” he concluded.

It is noted that one more name is yet to be announced to complete the ELAM ballot list for the European elections. Information suggests that the announcement of the last name will be made today or at the latest within the week and will concern a woman considered to be within the ELAM sphere.
