Cyprus battled by dust, relief expected tonight

Relevant News

Cyprus grappled with high levels of dust on Thursday, with air quality monitoring stations recording elevated particle concentrations across much of the island nation.

Meteorologist Andreas Hatzigeorgiou told philenews that the dust storm, attributed to a low-pressure system in North Africa, would begin to subside later in the evening.

However, a new bout of dust is expected to affect us on Saturday.

“This is a wave of dust created by a low-pressure system in the northern African region, which was carried to us by a western air current,” he said, clarifying that ‘the measurements are at red and orange levels. “At the airport, where we are, we have significantly reduced visibility. Usually, it is 15-20 km, but now, due to dust, it is down to 3 km.”

Looking ahead, Hatzigeorgiou said there would be periods of local cloudiness from Friday onwards, with a possibility of rain or even a thunderstorm late Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to remain within seasonal norms.
