Attorney General calls on police to protect public prosecutors

Relevant News

At the session of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice, and Public Order, where the issue of the security and salary upgrade of public prosecutors was discussed under the self-referential procedure, the Attorney General of the Republic, George Savvides, was present today.

In statements following the completion of the Committee’s session, the Attorney General of the Republic, expressing full support for the just, as he described them, demands of public prosecutors, said:

“My presence, along with two Prosecutors of the Republic, at today’s session of the Legal Committee to discuss the self-referential issue, concerning the salary increase and security issues of public prosecutors, highlights the importance the [Legal] Service places on these two very serious matters.”

“I want to clarify, as I did in the Legal Committee, that the leadership of the Legal Service stands by the public prosecutors on both their demands. Indeed, we had already taken measures for both matters even before they were brought before the Parliament.”

“We are deeply disturbed and troubled by the bomb attacks and other forms of attacks suffered by public prosecutors. We have shown from the very beginning and taken immediate action with the Police, which is primarily responsible for protecting public prosecutors and all colleagues dealing with criminal matters.”

“Because it’s not just the public prosecutors, there are many other lawyers in the Legal Service dealing with the issue. Therefore, the responsible body is the Police, and I believe it is their responsibility to take the necessary measures to protect all colleagues.”

“Regarding the economic issue, we have formed a working group with public prosecutors, which includes two Prosecutors of the Republic, to promote their just demand for a salary upgrade. Despite what was heard today from various bodies, I believe this issue can, and should, and we will promote its progression without waiting for the approval of any other bills concerning the Legal Service.”
