AKEL criticises government’s new refugee policies

Relevant News

“The decisions of the Christodoulides government regarding the management of refugee flows are not going to address the challenges posed by their increase,” states a press release by AKEL.

The party argues that these decisions, on the contrary, will exacerbate the problems.

Specifically, AKEL highlights that:

  • Pending asylum applications and appeals to the International Protection Court will increase.
  • Incentives will be given to those wanting to abuse the system by submitting asylum applications to secure their stay in Cyprus.
  • Problems will multiply in the First Reception and Hospitality Centres.
  • There will be a surge in illegal and undeclared work with consequences for the rights of all workers, both Cypriots and foreigners.

“The first and most important action that should have been taken by the Christodoulides government is to demand the obvious request for the distribution of refugee flows among all member states according to their population and capabilities, as was done in the case of Ukrainian refugees,” concludes the statement.
