The Forestry Department has posted a video of Xyliatou dam which has overflowed following the heavy rains of recent days.
Meanwhile, authorities have announced special safety measures in anticipation of the imminent overflowing of Asprokremmos dam, the island’s second largest.
The Water Development Department and police said measures are in place at Asprokremmos to ensure the safety of visitors.
The road above the dam was closed from January 2 and will remain closed for as long as the dam overflows. Traffic will be diverted on the old Paphos-Limassol road. Access to the dam with private vehicles will be possible only from the west side of the dam at Xeros Potamos Bridge.
Access by bus and other large vehicles will be permitted only from the east side, that is th Nicoklia road.
The road above the dam will be free of vehicles and vans selling refreshments to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians. Vendors are asked to set up off the road.
Visitors are urged to follow the instructions of officials of the Water development Department and of Paphos police, to show respect for the environment and to keep the area free of litter.
The dam is currently is 97.8% full.
Four smaller dams have already overflowed — Pomos, Argakas, Kalopanayiotis and Xyliatos
