UN Envoy expected in Cyprus in May

Relevant News

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, is expected to visit Cyprus in early May, after the Easter holidays, the government spokesman said on Friday.

Before her arrival, she is scheduled to travel to Berlin, Paris, and Brussels.

Government spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis said that Holguin will meet with President Christodoulides in early May “to discuss the next steps.”

Letymbiotis reiterated “once again our unwavering commitment to efforts to resume negotiations from where they left off, as the European Union itself has stressed, our commitment to the UN Security Council resolutions and the agreed framework.”

Commenting on the outcome of the extraordinary EU summit, the government spokesman said that “with the European Council’s conclusions the day before yesterday, the goal that the President of the Republic had set from the first moment of assuming office is essentially being implemented, namely the linking of EU-Turkey relations with progress on the Cyprus issue.”

He went on to stress that the European Union and Cyprus sent “a specific message to the Turkish side that we are constructive and that there can be progress on chapters of interest to Turkey if there is corresponding progress on the Cyprus issue.”
