An 84 year old man was killed when his car plunged down a 50 metre ravine in the Ayios Epiphanios area in Nicosia on Friday afternoon, the second road fatality in Cyprus in 24 hours.
Police named the victim as Yiorgos Arsalides, 84, from Ayios Epiphanios.
They said that the accident occurred between 2.30 pm and 8 pm on Friday on a rural road in Ayios Epiphanios.
Under conditions which are being investigated, the car driven by Arsalides went off the road and fell down a 50 metre ravine.
The car was spotted around 8 pm and police alerted. Police officers and fire fighters as well as members of Emak, the disaster response unit, went to the scene and cut the victim loose from the car.
He was taken to Nicosia Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Nicosia traffic police are investigating.
This was the second road fatality in one day. A 70 year old woman from Akaki was killed when the car she was a passenger in collided with another car near the Akaki roundabout at 5.30 am on Friday.
