Moscow praises Nicosia’s action over Russian Cultural Centre fire on Wednesday

Relevant News

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has praised the work of the Cyprus Fire Brigade and law enforcement officials for their professionalism and quick action over the recent fire at the Russian cultural center in Nicosia.

She also said that Moscow was closely monitoring the case.

“The causes of the fire are under investigation. An intentional arson attack has not been ruled out,” Zakharova also said.

Philenews reported on Friday that ongoing investigations into Wednesday’s large fire that caused extensive damage to the Cultural Center appears to have been sparked accidentally – most probably from a cigarette butt.

Insiders also said that there is no evidence suggesting foul or malicious act and that Russia press reports alleging Molotov cocktails being thrown are unsubstantiated.

Nonetheless, all possibilities are still being investigated as an official preliminary report was expected on Friday.

The Russian Embassy in Nicosia on Wednesday evening only said the fire had been extinguished and reported no casualties.

Reports suggest the fire may have started outside from a tossed or discarded cigarette and grew rapidly through insulation material present on site due to ongoing renovation work.
