Ap. Varnavas lyceum pupils, staff to be tested for Covid-19

Relevant News

All final year pupils as well as staff at the Apostolos Varnavas upper secondary school (lyceum) will be tested for Coivid-19 after a member of the support staff tested positive for coronavirus.

The positive case was announced yesterday, with the Education Ministry saying that the lyceum would be disinfected so that classes for final year pupils can resume.

However early on Sunday, the parents association criticised the measures in place at the school as inadequate, noting that very few of the pupils and staff had been tested. They said that pupils should not go to schools until all have been tested and the results have come back negative.

But in an announcement later on Sunday, it said that after consultations with the Education Ministry it had been decided that all final year pupils and all staff will be tested.

A mobile unit will be at school at 7.30 am on Monday and the school was due to notify pupils today.

Parents are urged to give their consent to the tests. The consent form must be sent or taken by the pupils to school tomorrow, the association added.

“All pupils are urged to come to school tomorrow for the test bringing the required protected personal equipment (gloves, masks), maintaining a distance and complying with all safety measures,” the parents association said.

And it expressed the hope that there are no new coronavirus cases so that the school and final year pupils can continue their education unimpeded in preparation for the final exams.
