Education Ministry: 2 pupils, 2 staff test positive for coronavirus

Two of today’s four coronavirus cases concern pupils from an upper secondary school (lyceum) in Aradippou and the others concern staff at two schools — a lyceum in Nicosia and a nursery school in Paphos, the Education Ministry said on Saturday.

It issued the announcement minutes after the Health Ministry said all four of today’s positive coronavirus cases were from tests carried out by mobile units among pupils, teachers and other staff at schools across the island.

“Two cases concern the pupil population of a lyceum at Aradippou. One case was found among staff at a nursery school in Paphos and the fourth concerns a member of support staff at a lyceum in the Nicosia district,” the Ministry said.

Four new coronavirus cases, all from schools; total now 914

The Health Ministry said it has activated the required protocols  to deal with such instances. The two lyceums will be disinfected and all the other actions provided by the health protocol will be taken. Both schools will reopen once they have been disinfected.

The ministry said that the tests will continue and will be widened to included more pupils.

“As experts have noted it is very useful to make available to them as much data as possible so as to monitor the situation,” the ministry added.

As regards Aradippou, bearing in mind the previous epidemiological picture and after consultations with the Health Ministry, it was decided to expand the sample of tests to cover all pupils of all levels in the town. The ministry urged parents and guardians to consent to these tests.

The Education Ministry added that it is in constant contact with the Health Ministry.
