In a meeting held at the Cultural Centre of the Peyia Municipality on Saturday, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Petros Xenofontos, assured that the road network projects in Akamas would be carried out in the right way and for the benefit of the region.

The responsible minister announced that both ongoing and planned projects would undergo a reevaluation by appointed experts.

These experts visited the area on Saturday to assess the situation on-site.

Within 10 days, they will return with a comprehensive proposal outlining the next steps for advancing the projects.

Minister Xenofontos emphasized that transparency would guide all actions, with updates provided to the Ad Hoc committee and the communities of the peninsula.

The contractor for the project, present at the meeting, pledged to allow sufficient time for a proper reassessment of ongoing projects, ensuring the right course of action.

“If we need to make changes, we will make them according to the guidance of the experts,” stated Mr. Xenofontos.

Commissioner for the Environment, Maria Panayiotou, affirmed that the discussions held in the meeting would be put into action.

Mayor of Peyia, Marinos Lambrou, requested a report within 15 days, while Giagos Tsivikos, President of the local council of Ineia, stressed the need for an immediate redesign, emphasizing that communities would not accept any compromises.

Speaking on behalf of the experts, Dimitris Melissas, Professor at the School of Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, explained that their presence at the meeting was related to achieving harmonious coexistence between the environment and the residents of Akamas communities.
