Vrontados in Chios witnessed its annual Easter tradition unfold spectacularly this year, as residents upheld the centuries-old custom of the rocket war.
The rival teams from the two parishes commenced their celebration with a joint parade along the Vrontados coastline before reaching their designated “battle stations.”
Thousands of rockets lit up the night sky, creating a breathtaking display for the estimated 20,000 spectators from Greece and abroad.
Volunteers ensured the event’s smooth running, while the Fire Service extinguished minor fires, and police managed traffic control.
The tradition concludes on Easter Sunday morning with the Municipality of Chios and volunteers collecting the spent rocket casings from homes and streets, marking the end of the festivities until the next rocket war in 2025.
