Renovation of Limassol’s historic square

Relevant News

The ambitious project to redevelop the historic Heroes Square in Limassol is about to start.

The bidding period from interested construction firms has concluded, and the awarding of the bid by the competent Committee of the Limassol Municipality is expected in the coming days.

As reported by Phileleftheros, more than 10 construction companies showed interest following the announcement of an open competition for the redevelopment of Heroes Square and its surrounding streets. However, only two of them submitted bids for the project, which has an estimated value of €3.4 million.

In statements to Phileleftheros, Andreas Neofytou, the President of the Limassol Municipality Bidding Committee, mentioned that at this stage, the municipality’s competent service, consisting of a three-member committee, is in the process of evaluating the submitted bids.

He said that next Friday or possibly the following week, the Bidding Committee will convene, and after the evaluation of the bids, the award will be announced by the Municipality’s Bidding Committee.

Subsequently, due to the multi-million-euro nature of the project, the Committee’s proposal will be presented for a vote before the full Municipal Council, where the final decision will be made.

The project is entering its implementation phase, and it is expected that the relevant contracts will be signed within the next two months.

Construction work will then commence. When asked about the actions to be taken if the terms of the bid are not met, Neofytou stated that bids might have to be reissued.

The project is being implemented within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme THALEIA 2021-2027, co-financed by the European Union.

An architectural competition preceded the project, where the work titled “Everyday Heroes Square” by the study group of Socrates Stratis-AA&U and Christos Pasadakis-KIS was selected.

According to the architects, the works will be carried out in such a way as to minimize the impact on the residents and owners of the square’s cafes and restaurants.

The Municipality’s goal is to highlight the square’s significance through its historical and social data, as well as the architectural and monumental elements that characterize the area and have played a significant role in its development to this day.

The proposal titled “Everyday Heroes Square” shapes the square based on a “smart” floor, which will serve as a grid of infrastructure for social and ecological processes.

The floor will consist of perforated surfaces for rainwater collection and its transfer to underground tanks through linear channels running across the square’s surface.

The new floor layout will allow seamless movement across the entire square without steps and will connect with the surrounding streets that will be pedestrianized for part of the day.

Specific structures are also proposed, such as “Little Rialto”, “Idea Greenhouse for Everyone”, “Playground”, and “Hanging Gardens”.
