Rainfall and water in dams decline

From the beginning of the hydrological year on October 1, the average rainfall in areas under the control of the Republic of Cyprus has decreased by 44%, with dam capacity limited to 46%, according to preliminary data from the Meteorological Department.

As of 08:00 am today, the average rainfall in open areas since October 1 is recorded at 84.2 millimeters, compared to the historical data of 191.6 mm from 1961-1990, representing a 44% decrease.

Over the last 24 hours, rainfall amounted to 3.6 millimeters, significantly lower than the normal historical average of 105.6 millimeters.

The highest rainfall percentages compared to the normal levels are observed at the Athienou station with 94%, followed by Stavros Psokas with 82%, and Proedros with 75%.

The lowest percentages are recorded in Xylotymbou with only 11%, followed by Larnaca Airport and Athalassa station in Nicosia with 16% and 18%, respectively.

Additionally, recent data from the Water Development Department reveals that the overall capacity of Cyprus’s major dams stands at 46%, compared to last year’s 68%.

Since October 1, a total of 2.34 million cubic meters of water have flowed into the dams, with only 0.06 million cubic meters entering in the last 24 hours.
