No proper treatment method for children, adolescents with mental health problems

Relevant News

Cyprus lacks a proper treatment method for children and adolescents with mental health problems including several types of emotional and behavioural disorders.

And this creates great difficulty in the implementation of a proper therapy, care and handling of them, according to a report by Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights Despo Michaelidou.

The report focuses on the system of alternative care provided to children who, for various reasons, are under the legal care of the state, Philenews reports.

The absence of specialized intensive programs and structures for minors who present such problems is found both for children who live with their families, as well as for children accommodated in other structures and homes. These difficulties are also pointed out by officers of the Social Welfare Services directly involved in such cases, the Commissioner’s report also noted.

In fact, reference is made to specific examples of teenagers whose proper management is absent.
