New complaints surface in St. Habakkuk scandal

Relevant News

A new complaint has recently been submitted to the Police concerning the scandal involving the Habakkuk Monastery.

Information from philenews states that, apart from a citizen’s complaint about sexual harassment and the self-initiated investigation into an attack on a woman in the monastery’s courtyard by a monk, a new case is also being investigated.

The new complaint concerns interference with a witness who has already testified to the Police investigating the scandal and alleges influence.

At present, due to the complexity of mutual complaints, nothing else is reported until this case is also investigated.

Regarding the complaints of sexual harassment of an individual who was employed at the Monastery for a period and the attack on a woman with a belt, these are in the final stages of investigation.

The side of the monks has also reported leaks of testimonies to the media.

According to the same information, examinations concerning the funds accumulated at the Monastery are progressing deeply to determine which amounts were justified by the fundraisers made, what was declared to the relevant department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and to clarify the amount that remains “orphaned”.

Already, as we have revealed, the Police proceeded a week ago to seize an amount exceeding one million euros, suspecting it came from illegal activities.

The side of the acting archimandrites, although keeping their cards close, nonetheless claims to have evidence and explanations for the discovered funds and will provide them when summoned by the investigators.

Meanwhile, it is emphasized that, while the Prosecutor General had spoken of “imminent developments,” information suggests that investigators want to carefully examine all aspects of the case concerning the €807,000 found at the Monastery before taking drastic steps with the issuance of warrants.

At the same time, the cases being investigated concerning the Monastery are numerous, and the investigations will take a considerable amount of time, which is why every aspect that is completed will be presented before the Prosecutor General for instructions.

So far, the Police has not disclosed its findings to both sides to show what it is investigating, and as it has reached 34 days of investigations, this is expected to be done in the immediate future.

What is allowed to leak is that from the evidence so far, crimes seem to emerge, however, everything will be judged in due course.

However, the recent extensive statement of Archimandrite Nektarios on social media is considered by some, apart from an attempt to provide explanations for everything attributed to the Monastery, as an effort not to fuel the fire any further, in what is brought to light in the public eye.
