Mari blast victim awarded higher compensation after appeal

Relevant News

A victim of the 2011 Evangelos Florakis Naval Base explosion in Mari, Larnaca, has been awarded a higher amount as compensation and lost future earnings after a partial appeal success.

The plaintiff, who was injured while in a vehicle near the blast site, sued the Republic of Cyprus for damages. The responsibility for the injuries was accepted by the state.

The District Court in Larnaca initially awarded €100,000 in general damages, including €3,191 for lost future earnings, along with special damages and legal interest. However, the Court of Appeal, in a decision issued on March 6, 2024, deemed the award for lost earnings insufficient.

The Court of Appeal increased the compensation for lost future earnings to €60,000, acknowledging the lasting impact of the injuries. The remaining portions of the District Court’s decision, including general damages for pain and suffering, interest, and costs, were upheld.

The claimant sustained permanent hearing loss, tinnitus, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the explosion. Medical reports documented the ongoing effects on his sleep, concentration, and social life.

While the general damages award remained unchanged, the Court of Appeal recognised the chronic nature of the plaintiff’s condition and its significant impact on his ability to earn a living.
