Lawyer notes health decline of 82-year-old in self-defense case

The Court of Appeal reserved its decision regarding the appeal of 82-year-old grandfather Chrysanthos, who was sentenced initially to an immediate two-and-a-half-year prison term for shooting an intruder on his property.

During yesterday’s proceedings before the appellate court, lawyer Maria Neophytou was asked to comment on the current health condition of the elderly convicted man, presenting medical documents certifying his deteriorating health following the conviction by the Limassol Criminal Court.

Neophytou additionally mentioned that the 82-year-old is hospitalized at Limassol Hospital due to worsened health and required a holter monitor.

It should be noted that the 82-year-old has been under medical care since March 29th.

On its part, the Court of Appeal questioned the lawyer about the reason the 82-year-old was detained at Limassol CID and not at the Central Prisons, with the latter clarifying that the reasons relate to health issues and the need for continuous monitoring of the elderly man by doctors.

Furthermore, the lawyer of the 82-year-old adopted all the points mentioned in the diagram submitted last week to the Court of Appeal.

She pointed out that the initial court incorrectly did not grant a suspensive character to the 2 ½-year prison sentence imposed on the 82-year-old. She also emphasized that, in the case of the 82-year-old, the court should have exercised its discretion in favor of suspension.
